Number of Players: 2-8
Initial deal: Five face-down cards are
dealt to each player.
The Play: There is a betting round after
the initial deal. The player to the immediate left of the
dealer starts the betting. After the betting round, each
player can exchange as many cards. (Sometimes a player can
draw four cards if he shows that his remaining card is an
ace. And some games even allow you to exchange all five
cards! Check which rules you are playing before you start.)
Another round of betting ensues, followed by the showdown.
Strategy: Stay in for additional cards
if you have the following hands:
- A pair or better
- Four cards to a straight of flush
- A pair of kings, if someone else opened (i.e., was first
to act)
- Any two pair, raise
Who opens and bets first is important:
that player must be the first to bet after the draw.
Showdown: The player makes his best five-card
hand using all the cards in his hand.
